Overview: Projected job losses in the road building and heavy construction sector this year will approach 6,000 direct jobs, and between 9,000 and 14,000 indirect jobs. This will result in business failures in the direct industry and related businesses such as fuel distributors, equipment and parts suppliers, and service providers. It will also likely result in higher prices and therefore increased costs to Alberta taxpayers due to reduced competition when the projects are eventually completed. This report contains factual impact statements from Alberta contractors on the effects of recent budget cuts and the current wild swings in Alberta Transportation funding.
