Overview: A Gulf Coast Refiner was experiencing significant fouling in the preheat section of their hydrotreater. The fouling forced the refinery to shutdown the unit, clean the exchangers and some catalyst change out. The Hydrotreater processes 36 KBD of jet fuel and had experienced very short run lengths of 7-9 months using a competitive product at 12 ppm. The BJ Chemical Services' analytical laboratory was able to identify that the aviation fuel had a very high potential gum problem. With the use of the Alcor (a heat transfer fouling simulator), they were able to determine that the jet fuel had a very high fouling tendency.
