Overview: This paper is about the labeling of foods in the organic foods industry. The National Center suggests in releasing this survey that proposed USDA guidelines for "organic" labels and marketing will mislead consumers about perceived safety, nutrition, environmental benefits and quality of organic foods. Additionally, the proposed federal guidelines will contribute to and perpetuate a history of inappropriate and unfounded product disparagement and "food fear" marketing strategies intrinsic to the growth and success of the organic and natural products retail industry.
