Overview: EPRI and the California Energy Commission (CEC), the principle sponsor of this project, have collected information on potential environmental impacts of chemicals used in California's photovoltaic (PV) industry. This report provides an overview of the photovoltaic industry and includes the types of cells that were manufactured or under development through 2002 and the chemicals used in the manufacturing processes and final modules. The potential for chemicals used in PV cells to be released to air, surface water, and groundwater was considered for the manufacturing facility, the installation site, and the disposal or recycling facility.
