Overview: Incorporated in 1856, San Mateo County has been at the forefront of communities championing renewable energy and conservation. In 1998, a State audit concluded that local crime laboratories required improvements to bring them up to standards. The decision was made to move San Mateo's Forensics Lab and Coroner's Office to a more modern facility. Recognizing that operating laboratories require significant energy resources, the crime lab was constructed with an emphasis on renewable resources. San Mateo County's Forensics Lab and Coroner's office is a model for sustainable design, incorporating solar electric generation, recycled materials and high performance lighting.
