Overview: This study describes how the EPA was able to reduce the laboratory's annual energy cost by 60% and water consumption by 60%. It is geared toward architects and engineers who are familiar with laboratory buildings and is one in a series produced by Laboratories for the 21st Century, a joint program of the EPA and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). These case studies exemplify the "Labs21" approach, which encourages the design, construction, and operation of safe, sustainable, high-performance laboratories. The new HVAC system uses state-of-the-art digital controls, incorporates variable air volume on supply and exhausts systems, provides for recirculation of air in certain testing cells, and allows for energy recovery from the exhaust air stream.
