Overview: The hedge fund industry has grown tremendously since it was founded 50 years ago. Since the late 1980s, the number of hedge funds has risen by more than 25% per year. Despite the increased interest in hedge funds as an asset class, there is only a limited understanding of what drives hedge fund continuation and liquidation. This paper explores the drivers of the life cycles of hedge funds. Both individual and category 1 related factors are explored in the paper, using the TASS database provided by the Tremont Company.
