Overview: The project has placed emphasis on energy efficiency, as well as emissions reductions and workplace improvements. Hydro has already lowered its fluoride emissions, while improved process control and natural ventilation in particular are helping to reduce power consumption. When Hydro built the new Sunndal plant, the company also made other improvements like using liquid natural gas instead of fuel oil in the casthouses, and propane in the anode baking furnace, which is lowering emissions of SO2, CO2, NOx and soot.
