Overview: The growing number of private investment funds that acquire interests in other private equity funds, either in direct purchases or in secondary purchases from other investors, reflects a new stage in the maturation of the private equity industry. Funds of funds play an important role in providing investors with diversification in private equity commitments. However, the article shows that these funds face a barrage of regulatory and tax issues in the US and this should be a matter of concern to everyone in the industry.
