Overview: This paper is the result of a study carried out by ENVIROS Consulting Ltd for the Department of Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) to identify aspects of International Best Practice in Municipal Solid Waste Prevention and Reduction. The Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (Directive 94/62/EC) has had a profound impact on packaging design and management across the EU. The Directive, including the waste management aspects and the Essential Requirements design aspects, has been implemented across the EU in various forms.
