Overview: There are approximately 560 quota holding poultry producers in Alberta. Production has increased during the same time period, which is consistent with the trend towards fewer but larger-scale farm operations. The structure of Alberta poultry industry is very different from the US poultry industry. In the US, vertically integrated companies control most aspects of production, product quality and cost from the egg to the dinner table. In spite of the differences between the Alberta and American poultry industries, costs of production in Alberta are similar to those in the United States. The economies of scale of the American poultry producers offer some advantages.
