Overview: In the early 1980's, the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) recognized that the poultry industry of Mississippi had a great economic impact on the state. By the mid 1980's, the CVM had increased its number of faculty with expertise in poultry diseases and health management. These faculty members have provided for teaching, service, research and extension to benefit the expansion of the industry within the state. Until 1997, this was accomplished with marginal levels of state funding specified for poultry projects. When explicit funding was approved in 1997, additional faculties were added to assist in field diagnostics, food safety and molecular biology.
