Overview: A correspondence audit is, obviously, an audit that is conducted through the mail. These are usually performed because the IRS computers have reviewed your tax return and have found a discrepancy. You will receive a notice from the IRS informing you that there is a question regarding one or more items on your tax return. The IRS will ask you to submit additional documentation to substantiate what you reported on your tax return. If the item in question is a math error, you will either be given a refund or be asked to pay additional taxes.
