Overview: Energy transitions do not occur in a vacuum. Past shifts have been propelled by technological change and a range of social, economic and environmental forces. Resource limits are one force that could help push the world away from fossil fuels in the coming decades. Oil is the main energy source today, accounting for 30 percent of commercial use. Natural gas has emerged as an environmentally preferred alternative for many uses. Coal continues to maintain a key role in power generation. Natural gas and coal are both available in sufficient amounts to last to the end of the 21st century and perhaps beyond.
