Overview: This white paper is intended to facilitate the sharing of ideas on issues relevant to community-based home health care needs and support services for rural residents. Specifically, the paper addresses the problem of unmet health care and support needs of a rapidly expanding rural elderly population. It is well known that as the population ages, there is a corresponding increase in the need for health care and support services. More than 62 million Americans (25% of the U.S. population) live in rural areas and a growing proportion are elderly who suffer from one or more chronic conditions. This paper presents a rather broad landscape of issues relevant to the health and well-being of rural elderly in order that readers have some background knowledge of, and an appreciation for, the plethora of factors impacting any proposed solution's). .
