Overview: The success of the Expeditionary Air Force depends on the ability of the warfighter to deliver lethal firepower against an adversarial force. Victory requires the readiness and availability of mission-capable fighters, bombers, and transport aircraft to move supplies forward to support wartime operations. However, keeping aircraft mission capable has become more and more difficult as shrinking military budgets result in dramatic reductions in aircraft acquisitions and drive the Air Force to extend the expected service life for many airframes up to 40 years or more. This paper will begin with a discussion of the discovery process for these problem parts. Using the weapon systems active parts list (APL) and facilitated by a methodology previously developed in WR-ALC/RE known as Inventory Investment and Management Model (I2M2), one can stratify parts into investment classes by cost and usage.
