Overview: Department stores, once the first choice for shoppers and the royalty of retailing, have hit tough times. The faltering economy has delivered a blow to the big stores that already were under the gun from nimble discounters like Target and specialty stores such as Best Buy, which barged into lines they once dominated. Department stores are fighting back with format changes and other innovations. The Macy's store in Scottsdale offers centralized checkout and shopping carts, unthinkable only a few years ago. And it's no coincidence that the changes are similar to what competitors such as Target and Kohl's offer.
